Head, David.

He sent leanness : a book of prayers for the natural man / David Head.

This is a most amusing little book, but of course it is far more than that. Even while it makes us laugh it exposes with uncanny insight many of our secret wishes and unexpressed desires. To have these rather disreputable voices expressing themselves in prayer is a shocking thing. But it is quite right that we should be shocked we cannot deny the clamour of these inward voices, and until we realise their strength we cannot do much effective praying as Christians. I hope a lot of people laugh at, and think about, the pages of this stimulating exposure of the hypocrite in us all.  Book jacket, now pasted on page [5].

Herman, Nicolas, 1611-1691.

The practice of the presence of God : being conversations and letters of Nicolas Herman of Lorraine, Brother Lawrence

translated from the French.Brother Lawrence was a humble man who followed the direct path to communion with God. For him, there was no distinction between a time of business and a time of worship. He felt the presence of God whether he was working in his kitchen or worshipping in his church. This little record of the mind and heart of a man who saw God in all things is meant to serve as an inspiration and guide for all those who seek true and constant communication with their Creator.  Back cover.

Baillie, John,    1886-1960.

A diary of private prayer / by John Baillie.

This is a book of personal devotions which compels a deep searching of one’s inner life. Dr. Baillie has written each prayer so that it has that rare quality of seeming to have been written for the reader personally, to fit his own special needs. Here is an understanding of the aspects of God’s relation to man and man’s relation to God through prayer. Adoration, meditation, and intercession are mingled with a strong sense of the social needs of the world as well as the needs of the individual  all done with that perfect taste and feeling for worship for which Dr. Baillie is so widely recognized. If private prayer may be characterized as the wrestling of the soul with God, this book will be a real assistance in making that struggle not only easier, but more constructive.  Book jacket.

Bonhoeffer, Dietrich,    1906-1945.

Life together / by Dietrich Bonhoeffer

translated, and with an introduction, by John W. Doberstein. When Dietrich Bonhoeffer was martyred by the Nazis late in the war, he left as a heritage the memory of a life of heroic resistance and saintly long-suffering and sGSa extraordinarily provocative writings. There may cGSa time when the name Bonhoeffer will be linked with Woolman, Francis of Assisi, Wesley, and john Huss. Pulpit Digest.  This book grew directly out of his own experience of the deep meaning of Christian community found in life together in an underground seminary established by the Confessing Church. What this experience should mean in the corporate fellowship of today’s Christian is here movingly documented by one whose peculiar strength lies in great religious ideas expressed in simple, incisive, almost Biblical language.  Book jacket.

Cliffe, Albert E. (Albert Edward), 1892-1954.

Let go and let God : steps in victorious living / Albert E. Cliffe.

[This book] is an inspiring and affirmative guide to victorious living by a Canadian layman who assumed leadership of the movement for spiritual healing within the framework of organized religion. Himself a lay reader of the Episcopal Church, Dr. Cliffe, whose title is evidence of his background in practical science, preaches here a modern and easy-to-understand Christianity that can be accepted by members of any denomination and used to make their lives happier, healthier and more rewarding in every degree.  Book jacket.

Trueblood, Elton, 1900-

The Lord’s prayers / by Elton Trueblood.

With the insight, eloquence, and practical wisdom for which he is noted, Elton Trueblood here explores in depth and detail the prayers of Christ. His aim is to help the Christian toward a living encounter with his Lord and toward deeper devotion through imitation of Christ in the practice of prayer. [This book] deals with the background and the meaning of each of Christ’s prayers that is quoted in the Bible. The book also presents the total meaning of His communion with God. Although a full chapter is devoted to the Our Father ...,the special value of this book lies in its focus on the many other, often neglected, petitions.  Book jacket.

Mooneyham, W. Stanley (Walter Stanley), 1926-

Traveling hopefully : reflections for pilgrims in the fast lane / ßc Stan Mooneyham.

Robert Louis Stevenson once said, To travel hopefully is a better thing than to arrive. This is the philosophy that lies behind Stan Mooneyham’s intensely personal look at life in this book. Of his pilgrimage he writes, It is not a smooth ride down a freeway in a Cadillac with automatic transmission. It is more like my boyhood rides in a sputtering Model-T Ford over the bumpy, rural Mississippi roads of my childhood. ... I am absolutely certain of fewer things, but of the things that remain, I am more certain than ever before. And those things have to do with life’s basic issues  who Jesus is, who I am, the value of other people and God’s sovereignty in my life. About those things I shall not be moved. ... Now I affirm people more and my convictions less. ...Book jacket.

Beach, Waldo.

The Christian life / Waldo Beach

The Covenant Life Curriculum is offered to the churches as a new approach to Christian education. It has grown out of the work of a number of Christian scholars and teachers who were asked to take a fresh look at the task of building curriculum for Christian teaching and to suggest the pattern of a curriculum that would more adequately communicate the Christian faith in the life of the modern world. The Covenant Life Curriculum starts with the fact of revelation. It is based on the conviction that God has made himself known to man in Jesus Christ. It has its roots in the Presbyterian and Reformed tradition with strong emphasis on the centrality of Jesus Christ as the source f the life of the church. It offers the Bible, the Church, and the Christian Life as three areas of study through which the living Lord may continue to confront men today.  Preface, p. [2].

Carter, Nancy Corson, 1943-

Martha, Mary, and Jesus : weaving action and contemplation in daily life / ßc Nancy Corson Carter.

This book explores how the conventionally polarized attributes of these New Testament sisters  action for Martha and contemplation for Mary may be a healing unity in the light of Jesus’ teaching. Models for weaving this unity in our own lives include scriptural exegesis, journaling dialogues, affirmations, and exercises developing theological imagination. Overall, the work provides companioning meditations for those who yearn to connect our daily lives with God’s centering presence. Back cover.

Steeple stories Arnold 1968

Steeple stories of saints and sinners / compiled by Oren Arnold.

Steeple Stories is intended as a just-to-be-read-and-enjoyed book. But it can also be used as a sourcebook for speakers or pastors. In a day when laughter grows scarce, the people of God ought to take a long, humorous look at themselves. If anyone should be able to laugh, it should be the person who is in touch with God  the person who finds joy somehow amid the hardships, tests and trials of life. [This] is the perfect antidote for a low spirit  the ideal gift for a shut-in, the best relaxer for hypertension.  Back cover.

Nouwen, Henri J. M.

Out of solitude : three meditations on the Christian life /  by Henri J. M. Nouwen

photography by Ron P. van den Bosch. In the lonely place Jesus finds the courage to follow God’s will and not his own to speak God’s words and not his own to do God’s work and not his own. ... It is in the lonely place, where Jesus enters into intimacy with the Father, that his ministry is born. I want to reflect on this lonely place in our lives. Somewhere we know that without a lonely place our lives are in danger. Somewhere we knew that without silence words lose their meaning, that without listening speaking no longer heals, that without distance closeness cannot cure. Somewhere we know that without a lonely place our actions quickly become empty gestures. The careful balance between silence and words, withdrawal and involvement, distance and closeness, solitude and community forms the basis of the Christian life and should therefore be the subject of our most personal attention. Let us therefore look somewhat closer, first at our life in action, and then at our life in solitude.  Introduction, p. 14-15.

Bogard, David.

Valleys and vistas after losing life's partner /  David Bogard

[photos by H. Armstrong Roberts].Here is one man’s story of bereavement and the uneven road he traveled back to a faith deeper than he ever before experienced. It is a personal account honest, rugged, unpretentious, but eloquent. Valleys and Vistas is a poignant record of a journey toward a deeper and wiser understanding of the total experience of life. The eventual destination reached is the place where, in the author’s words, one can even learn to thank God for what has happened, and echo the words of the psalmist, if not with a shout of victory, at least in a broken whisper, ‘It was good for me to have been oppressed.’ I do believe there is a dawn ahead. This book will help to crystallize the reader’s own ambivalent feelings toward grief: traumatic separation, estrangement, frustrated questionings, and the later valleys and vistas of profound but mellowing sorrow and restored peace and resignation.  Back cover.

Preaching biblically 1983

Preaching biblically / edited by Don M. Wardlaw.

Can anything new come from a book titled Preaching Biblically? Well, yes, surprisingly! What is new in this case is the notion that preaching ought to be ‘biblical’ not only in the theological content but also in form and style .... If your preaching is ready for some fresh breezes, this is a good place to find them The Christian Century.

Baker’s dictionary 1972

Baker’s dictionary of theology / Everett F. Harrison, editor-in-chief, Geoffrey W. Bromiley, associate editor, Carl F.H. Henry, consulting editor.

In recent years we have witnessed a resurgence of interest in biblical studies which continues unabated. It is fitting that a dictionary of theological and ecclesiastical terms should be added to the steadily increasing number of works designed to aid the student in acquiring a sound knowledge of the content of Scripture and of historical theology. The articles are framed with a view to acquainting the reader with the tension points in theological discussion today in addition to providing a positive exposition of the biblical content in each case. Preface.

Armstrong, Karen, 1944-

A history of God : the 4000-year quest of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam / by Karen Armstrong.

Why does God exist?  How have the three dominant monotheistic religions  Judaism, Christianity, and Islam  shaped and altered the conception of God?  How have these religions influenced each other?  In this stunningly intelligent book, Karen Armstrong, one of Britain’s foremost commentators on religious affairs, traces the history of how men and women have perceived and experienced God, from the time of Abraham to the present.  back cover.

Goldingay, John.

Models for interpretation of scripture / John Goldingay.

This definitive study looks at the task of interpreting Scripture by exploring four broad models for understanding Scripture, namely, witnessing tradition, authoritative canon, inspired word, and experienced revelation. The diversity of interpretive approaches implied by the use of these four models is carried further by a methodological catholicity and openness within each of the four major divisions of the book.  Back cover.

Affirming evangelism 1993

Affirming evangelism : a call to renewed commitment in the United Church of Christ / edited by Robert L. Burt

foreword by Walter A. Brueggemann. This collection of essays is the result of a happy event in the United Church of Christ, the symposium on evangelism sponsored by the United Church Board for Homeland Ministries, Division of Evangelism and Local Church Development and Eden Theological Seminary in 1990. The essays are welcome on two counts. First, they contain tough, rigorous arguments that go significantly beyond our heretofore-held ideas. Second, they help legitimate evangelism as an issue that does indeed concern the UCC and also the much larger public in other mainline churches. The essays reflect two aspects of evangelism in the UCC. On the one hand, we regard it as an emergency, although we are not agreed on what kind. On the other hand, we are agreed on what an appropriate response should be.  Foreword.

Tillich, Paul, 1886-1965.

The shaking of the foundations / by Paul Tillich.

Dr. Tillich’s influence on religious thought, both here and in Europe, can hardly be overestimated. His earlier writings, for the most part, have been concerned with problems of theology and philosophy, and full appreciation of them has been possible only for a small group of people. In his sermons, however, Dr. Tillich has directed his thought to a far wide audience in clear and understandable terms. A wide variety of Dr. Tillich’s sermons are collected in this volume. They are, as is all of Dr. Tillich’s work, original and brilliant moreover they have a direct and practical application to the personal and social problems of our religious life. All of them, upon their original presentation, provoked a marked response among listeners. No brief description can possibly do these sermons justice, but all who have heard them or have read the manuscript of this book have been deeply impressed.  Book jacket.

Girdlestone, Robert Baker, 1836-1923.

Synonyms of the Old Testament : their bearing on Christian doctrine / Robert Baker Girdlestone.

The controversies that exist in the Christian Church are a source of trouble and perplexity to every thoughtful mind. It might naturally be supposed that those who profess to follow one and the same Master to venerate one and the same Book as the final court of appeal in matters pertaining to religion, would agree on all questions of faith and ecclesiastical order but this is far from being the case. ... The author earnestly desires that readers of this book may gain  as he has gained in writing it  a deepened conviction of the truth, the unity, and the authority of the Scriptures, and that it may influence members of various parties and denominations to enter on a critical and systematic study of the sacred records in their original languages. p. 13, 10.

Coffin, William Sloane.

Once to every man : a memoir / William Sloane Coffin, Jr.

Among the representative men of our era, William Sloane Coffin, Jr., stands out as that unique individual whose life and career epitomize the dramatic issues and conflicts social, political, spiritual and academic  of his time. CIA operative and civil rights activist, clergyman and iconoclast, army officer and champion of draft resisters, aspiring concert pianist and formidable athlete  Coffin truly has been a child of the century. Here is a man of unquenchable vitality and prodigious capabilities: relishing the challenges to advocates of liberty, equality and fraternity, posed by a complex and contradictory universe. Here is a man to whom civil disobedience has been more than a lofty abstraction: jailed in Alabama with Ralph Abernathy, on trial in Boston with Dr. Spock, at odds with the trustees and officers of Yale, he has never hesitated to risk the worst in order to achieve the best. And here is a profoundly reflective and deeply humorous man, whose tough-minded spirituality has been tempered in the furnace of public action. Book jacket.

Peacemaking heart Greenslade 1996

Your peacemaking heart : a collection of new stories and poems about biblical justice / edited by Ruth Greenslade.

[This], a well edited book of poetry, autobiographical vignettes, and religious probings in the struggles of faith, runs the range of human emotions. Throughout the contents, the Self -- twisted, confused, aspiring, deceptive, finding, losing, and finding again is on a journey along many different paths: some rocky, others meandering. But each journey is directed by human intentionality, the Souls’ vision toward new possibilities.

Stephan, Mary M.

God’s gifts in the midst of AIDS : Fred’s story, Mary’s journey / Mary M. Stephan.

Book One is the journey of a young man who lived with AIDS and died from the opportunistic infections of AIDS. His mother Mary tells his story in an informed, clear style, sharing her experiences as she fought to help Fred live and finally die with love and dignity. Their story offers needed information and encouragement to others who are facing a similar experience. Fred’s Story also has a message for the Communities of Faith whose members are facing illness and death  often without the support of family and of the people of faith, those who represent God’s love for all His children. Fred and Mary were sustained by their faith. In Mary’s Journey, Book Two, Mary sets forth her memorial to her son  the development of an AIDS Partnership of people of faith. Members of the Partnership seek to enlist the support of the Faith Communities for persons living and dying of HIV/AIDS and to teach AIDS prevention. Back cover.
