GOOD SAMARITAN CHURCH
MORE LIGHT/OPEN AND AFFIRMING STATEMENT

Adopted by the Session: 10/26/93, By the Congregation 2/12/94; Revised 2/22/00

PASTOR:  As Christians committed to act as agents of reconciliation and wholeness within the church and the world, we cannot ignore the existence of prejudice against gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered persons in our society, which gives them cause for uncertainty about their welcome in the church.

PEOPLE:  We therefore choose to avow, for all who will hear, and to practice, for all who will see, a covenant of inclusion for all persons without regard to sexual orientation and identity.

PASTOR:  We acknowledge God’s gift of sexuality with its joyous power and challenging mystery.

PEOPLE:  Making peace with that gift is a goal regardless of one’s sexual orientation, and is part of how we accept ourselves, as well as an important part of God’s acceptance of us.

PASTOR:  The Presbyterian Book of Order (G-05.0103) states: “Each member must seek the grace of openness in extending the fellowship of Christ to all persons.  Failure to do so constitutes a rejection of Christ himself and causes a scandal to the gospel.”  The congregation of Good Samaritan Church has a history of inclusiveness and of opposition to injustice by word and action.

PEOPLE:  We declare that we will continue to extend to anyone wishing to share in the work, worship and leadership of our congregation all the privileges and responsibilities of full membership regardless of sexual orientation.

ALL:  May God help us to keep this covenant as we grow into the fullness of Jesus Christ, who is Head of the church and Lord of our lives.
